L’avvocato di Assange è stato nominato ministro della giustizia francese - Assange's lawyer has been appointed French minister of justice
negli Stati Uniti.
I
Assange in Francia, dove dimorano i suoi figli.
Eric Dupond-Moretti, a lawyer for Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has been appointed as the new French justice minister.
Dupond-Moretti, a prominent criminal defense lawyer, was appointed to the ministry on Monday by Prime Minister Jean Castex.
The 55-year-old is known for his record number of absolution trials and in February he tried to convince European lawyers to pressure French President Emmanuel Macron to grant asylum to Assange.
We believe the situation is serious enough for us to talk about it, "Dupond-Moretti said of the Assange case at the time.
The Frenchman said the judicial persecution of the Australian was unfair, citing Assange's ill health and alleged violations of his rights while in prison in London
Dupond-Moretti's team also warned of "consequences for all journalists" if Assange had been extradited and imprisoned in the United States.
French members of Assange's legal team said they had worked on a "concrete request" for Macron to grant Assange asylum in France, where his children live.
It is unclear, however, whether Dupond-Moretti will now use his position to guarantee Australian asylum.
Assange has been held in pre-trial detention in London's Belmarsh prison since 11 October and faces an extradition hearing that decides whether he should be sent to the United States to face a trial.
The hearing was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and Assange has not appeared in court for more than three months.
Assange's next hearing will be held at the Westminster Magistrates' Court on July 27th.
The extradition process is expected to resume on 7 September.
The charges involve a total of 175 years in prison.
